Influence of binarization methods on the fractal dimension of alveolar bone using digital radiographs

ObjectiveTo evaluate the influence of binarization methods (BnMs) on fractal dimension (FD) alveolar bone in digital radiographic images.Study DesignFive identical periapical radiographs were obtained from each 20 anatomical regions. Using ImageJ/Fiji software, a standardized region interest was positioned trabecular all radiographs, 14 BnMs independently applied, and FD calculated. The Friedman Dunn post hoc tests used to (α=0.05). Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) assess among BnMs.ResultsNo significant difference observed threshold value between methods. No differences values 9 (Default, Huang, Iso Data, Li, Mean, Min Error(I), Moments, Otsu, Shanbhag). These presented significantly higher FDs than those 3 other (Max Entropy, Renyi Yen), which did not differ other. Triangle method differed BnMs, Percentile produced IsoData, Shanbhag. Most good or excellent (ICC ≥0.76).ConclusionBnMs radiographs; thus, this technical aspect is relevant for comparison purposes should be standardized. For purposes, Default recommended.
